Diploma In Sports - NVQ 5 (Full Time, One Year Course) The Diploma course conducted by the institute is unique in its kind and has contributed immensely to train the manpower required for the country in the field of sports for more than three decades. It is a one year full time course and the participants with necessary theoretical and practical background required for sports coaching. The students require high standards of sports competence or proven experience to follow this course Advanced Diploma In Coaching (Six Months Part Time NVQ 6) National Institute of Sports Science has introduced the Advanced Coaches course to provide in-depth knowledge in a particular sport to coaches of the same, to equip them with a sound practical background on rules, techniques and tactics of the game. A coach who gain this type of training will have the capacity in producing excellent results in the field. Coaches who have obtained the Diploma in Sports Science from National Institute of Sports Science are eligible to follow this higher diploma course. This course is designed only for a particular game each year. The course consists of academic work, field work and a research study. It is conducted as a six month full time course (600 hours) at present. The course is planned to be upgraded to NVQ level 6 standard. Certificate Course In Physical Fitness Instructor Training (NVQ 4) This course is designed to prepare a group of professionals who are capable of conducting physical fitness programs. Since, there is a high demand for physical fitness instructors at present, the students who follow this course has job opportunities in Sri Lanka as well as in the overseas. Certificate Course In Sports Science - Level I / II / III This course has been conducted since 2015 to empower the sports coaches with modern training methods targeting national and international games. This is comprised with 3 stages as Level I,II. III. Coaches Accreditation Program Ministry of Sports introduces the Coaches Accreditation Program to make sure that qualified personnel in sports science do sports training in Sri Lanka in the future. Training people in the field of exercise and sports is a science and an art as well. Application of a scientific basis to sports training facilitates to achieve the maximum benefit out of it with no physical and mental damage to the trainees. Coaches should take extreme care in their duty since they are the group of professionals who deal with the human beings in their work. If they make a mistake due to insufficient knowledge or any other reason it may end up in a permanent damage to the trainee under him. Standardization of the Coaches’ knowledge and capacity based on their qualifications and experience is important for getting the required service through a qualified coach. The standardization of the knowledge and capacity of a professional by an independent body is seen in many professions like medicine, engineering and accountancy etc. in Sri Lanka. Without the authorization of the same, nobody can practice in that discipline in the country. This type of a mechanism facilitates the general public to identify the right person for the right work. This provides a guarantee in getting the service of a professional and prevents unqualified people working in the field. Unavailability of this type of a mechanism in the field of sports has created many problems in the past. As such, the introduction of the Coaches’ Accreditation Program will fulfill a long-felt need of the country providing recognition for the profession of coach. Physical Fitness Program These scientifically designed programs provide guidelines to do aerobic and anaerobic exercise with nutrition advices. It is an opportunity to improve physical fitness and maintain body weight which are important aspects in present day situation because of high prevalence of obesity and other non- communicable diseases in the country. National Institute of Sports Science (NISS) is the premier institute of sports education in Sri Lanka. It was established under the provisions of the sports law No. 25, 1973 and named “Sports School with its inauguration in 1978 under the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Sports. It was reorganized in 1996 under the provisions of an Act of Parliament, which amended the original sports law and renamed as the National Institute of Sports Science. The Institute was attached to the Department of Sports Development in 1992. NISS has been functioning as a separate institute under the Ministry of Sports since 1st of January 2006
